Red Poppy Seeds

Susi Altermann

Red Poppy Seed (1 tsp). Perennial plants, large fist-sized flowers, petals deep red with a jet black spot reaching up from the base. Some bees go nuts with buzz-pollination behavior inside these flowers, audible from yards away. Stunning as a cut flower, lasting a few days when harvested young. Flowers can grow as tall as face-height, but they are vulnerable to being knocked lower by strong winds. Blooming mid- to late May in Walla Walla. Plants die back to roots in mid summer. Best if direct-sown in fall or early winter, but spring plantings should work as well. Young direct-sown plants do tolerate transplanting. Plants may not bloom their first spring, but they are well worth the extra wait. Our established plants receive moderate water 3x/week through drip irrigation. Grown by Susi Altermann and Bob Biles at West End Farm in Walla Walla, WA. Collected in July 2025. Four available at Zen West for $7 each.
